Happy Wanderer

Happy wanderer loves strolling around places. He always says 'go and I'm going to have a great time!'

Simple design that is suitable for absolute beginners to experienced crocheters. Made from leftover chunky yarn and quick to make. A small rucksack is essential for wandering around, so there he has it.

Finished size: 20x8x5cm

Materials

Mouth and nose

Rnd 1: Yarn B; ch 3, 2dc in the 2nd ch from hook, 4dc in the next ch, turn to work on other side of ch, 2dc in the next ch (6 sts).

Rnd 2: 2dc in the next st, dc in the next 2 sts, 2dc in the next 2 sts, dc in the next 2 sts, 2dc in the next st (12 sts).

Rnd 3: dc in each st around (12 sts) and leave enough yarn for sewing this part to the face. 

Head

Rnd 1: Yarn A; 6dc in an adjustable ring and pull the yarn end to tighten up (6 sts).

Rnd 2: 2dc in each st around (12 sts). 

Rnd 3: [dc in the next st, 2dc in the next st] 6 times (18 sts).

Rnd 4: [dc in the next 2 sts, 2dc in the next st] 6 times (24 sts).

Rnds 5-8: dc in each st around (24 sts).

Rnd 9: [dc in the next 2 sts, dc2tog] 6 times (18 sts).

Rnd 10: [dc in the next st, dc2tog] 6 times (12 sts).

Rnd 11: dc2tog 6 times (6 sts), leave enough yarn for sewing this part to the body. 

Body

Rnd 1: Yarn A; 6dc in an adjustable ring and pull the yarn end to tighten up (6 sts).

Rnd 2: 2dc in each st around (12 sts).

Rnd 3: [dc in the next st, 2dc in the next st] 6 times (18 sts).

Rnds 4-7: dc in each st around (18 sts).

Rnd 8: [dc in the next st, dc2tog] 6 times (12 sts).

Rnd 9: dc2tog 6 times, fasten off (6 sts).

Ears

Inner Layer: Yarn B; 6dc in an adjustable ring, pull the yarn end to tighten up and fasten off (6sts).

 

Outer Layer: Yarn A; 6dc in an adjustable ring, pull the yarn end to tighten up (6 sts).

Overlay the wrong side of inner layer on the wrong side of outer layer, work on the inner side, crochet both layers together with dc in the 1st stich of both layers, 2dc in the next st of both layers, [dc in the next st of both layers together, 2dc in the next st of both layers together] 2 times,  and fasten off (9 sts).  Hide and tidy up the leftover yarn.

Arms

Rnd 1: Yarn B; 6dc in an adjustable ring and pull the yarn end to tighten up (6 sts).

Rnds 2-3: dc in each st around (6 sts).

Rnd 4: Yarn A; dc in each st around (6 sts).

Rnds 5-9: dc in each st around (6 sts).

Rnd 10: [dc in the next st, dc2tog] 2 times (4 sts) and leave enough yarn for sewing this part to the body.

Legs

Rnd 1: Yarn B; 6dc in an adjustable ring and pull the yarn end to tighten up (6 sts).

Rnd 2: [dc in the next st, 2dc in the next st] 3 times (9 sts).

Rnd 3: dc in each st around (9 sts).

Rnd 4: Yarn A; [dc in the next st, dc2tog] 3 times (6 sts).

Rnds 5-10: dc in each st around (6 sts).

Rnd 11: [dc in the next st, dc2tog] 2 times (4 sts) and leave enough yarn for sewing this part to the body.

Ensemble

Attach both eyes on the face and add stuffing to the head, body, arms, legs and nose before stitching them together. Sew the ears to the left and right sides of the head.

 

Sew black yarn to form the nose and mouth of this part.

Materials

Remaining yarn and materials for making the happy wanderer.

Shoulder straps

Yarn B; ch 26, fasten off. Sew this part to the back of the back to form two shoulder holder loops.

Rucksack

Rnd 1: Yarn B; ch 5, 2dc in the 2nd ch from hook, dc in the next 2 chs, 4dc in the last ch, turn to work along other side of ch, dc in the next 2 chs, 2dc in the next ch (12 sts).

Rnd 2: [2dc in the next st, dc in the next 2 sts, 2dc in the next st] 2 times (16 sts).

Rnd 3: dc in each st around (16 sts).

Rnds 4-6: Yarn A; dc in each st around (16 sts).

Rnd 7: Yarn B; dc in each st around and fasten off (16 sts).

Crochet bag flap as follows:

 

Rnd 1: Yarn A; work on the right side and top back of the bag, bdc across 6 sts.

Rnds 2-3: Ch 1, turn; dc in each st across (6 sts).

Rnd 4: Ch 1, turn; dc2tog, dc in the next 2 sts, dc2tog and fasten off (4 sts).

 

Yarn A; dc around the edge of the flap by sl in the 1st st, dc in the next 2 sts, 2dc in the next st, dc in the next st, ss in the next st, 4ch (to form buttonhole), ss in the next st, dc in the next st, 2dc in the next st, dc in the next 2 sts, ss in the next st and fasten off. Sew a button to the front of the bag for securing the flap.
